Youtube downloads and Different video formats

Youtube will go HD soon as all know. You may also have noticed that the FLV player screen has become a wide one. Thats really exciting!

 

Anyways, you always watch youtube and wish that you could download the videos that you are watching right? There are a number of ways to do it. Some have become unreliable and many are spams anyways. Recently, I have accumulated a lot of stuff about youtube that I want to put up here….

 

There are different formats in which one can view a video on youtube. For example, take this video

This one is the normal format with a mono sound(320 x 180) that loads faster

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPd0b89osZQ&fmt=18

That one is the High Quality MP4 format with stereo sound that can be played on mobile phones(480x 270). You might notice that this link is same as above EXCEPT that there is an addition in the end saying “&fmt=18″. It means play this video in format(fmt) = 18.

So, with the format number 22, this is the HD quality video with stereo sound(1280 x 720). Yes, thats right! Of course, the fact if the video is true HD will depend on whether or not the uploader put true HD video. But, for 22, you get the best quality as it is!

Note :  1) There is a small option to view a video in higher quality just below the video when it is playing. But, not all videos have that yet. So, till Google puts that on all videos, use this trick.               

2) Higher the quality, higher the video size, longer it takes to load on slower connections.

 

Now, there are tons of sites that download youtube videos for a user. Most of them dont work now. But, the one I know which works is keepvid. Here, all you need to do is copy the url of the video you are WATCHING and paste it in that box in the site and hit download. Then, you will be presented with the option to download normal of HQ MP4 format of the video. Choose what you want. 

Add – on to download videos

For firefox users there is another option. You can download this add-on called “better youtube” that will place a download link right below the video and lets you download the video you are watching. You can get this add-on on the lifehacker site. 

Scripts to download videos

Now, what if you are on chrome, Opera or Safari. These scripts work for firefox also. But, they dont work for Internet Explorer. Maybe they want IE to lose its popularity . Anyways, here are the scripts

For normal videos

Sorry for the way the script are displayed. Just keep your mouse pointer on that line and double click so that everything will be selected. Then, when you are WATCHING the video, you just copy and paste these scripts and the download will start. Just remember to rename the file along with the extension. ex: If I download my example video, I would say “Donald.flv”.
